BBC Registers Strange But True Domain Names For Its Programmes
The BBC has registered some seemingly strange domain names associated with some of its television shows, according to a report in London’s Daily Telegraph, a newspaper not known for its support of the BBC.
According to the report, the BBC recently released a list of 154 web domains that it owns, including desperaterussianhousewives.co.uk, watchagrownmanrot.co.uk, singlessos.co.uk and bestmurders.co.uk.
According to the Beeb, the websites are used to promote its programmes with links back to the BBC website.
An example of the domain names registered and used was the “Desperate Russian Housewives” and “Watch a Grown Man Rot” sites, that the report says “stem from an EastEnders storyline in 2007 in which the character Darren Miller was trying to make money online, by using sites with these names. While the storyline was playing out on BBC One in the soap opera, the BBC created real websites featuring promotional information about the fictional Miller family.”
A BBC spokesman said: “As a global broadcaster the BBC owns a wide range of domain names. Some of the more unexpected ones on the list have been created as part of programme storylines. We’ve not got any plans to launch a desperate Russian housewives site.”
